Parenting a child on the autism spectrum comes with unique challenges, moments of joy, and significant uncertainties. Jordan, my son, was diagnosed with autism at the age of three, and since then, our family has learned that no amount of preparation can fully equip you for the day-to-day experiences of raising a child on the spectrum. Autism is called a spectrum for a reason; each day presents new challenges and blessings, ranging from meltdowns and eloping to heartfelt hugs and infectious laughter. These experiences inspired the creation of Autism Shield Alliance (ASA).
In 2024, a tragic event shook our family and spurred us into action. A young man on the spectrum lost his life during an encounter with the police. This heartbreaking incident highlighted the urgent need for better awareness and understanding of autism, particularly in interactions with first responders. As parents of a young Black male who is both non-verbal and on the spectrum, this tragedy hit close to home, amplifying our fears and driving us to make a difference.
The mission of ASA is to educate and spread awareness about autism, not only among parents and caregivers but also within the broader community. By fostering understanding and building better relationships between individuals with autism and first responders, we aim to create a safer and more inclusive environment. We also strive to provide families with resources and support, offering safe spaces where they can navigate the unique challenges of autism without fear of judgment or misunderstanding.
Founded in April 2024, Autism Shield Alliance represents our commitment to creating a brighter future for individuals on the spectrum. Our goal is to empower families, bridge gaps within communities, and promote acceptance and inclusion so that everyone, regardless of their abilities, can thrive.
